Rotarian of the Day . . . Jeanne Bussey

Jeanne was born in Monett, Mo. and grew up in Tulsa, graduating from Will Rogers High School and Northeastern A&M College. After college, she moved to Stillwater in 1971 where her husband finished his degree at Oklahoma State University and then moved to the Vinita area where they have resided since on their family farm. Jeanne works in the Public Relations & Marketing Department for The First National Bank & Trust here in Vinita.

Jeanne and her husband, Ray, who is the Credit Manager for C & L Supply, have two children and three grandchildren. Their daughter, Regina, was a Senior Rotarian and a 2000 recipient of a Rotary Scholarship.

Various community activities that she has participated in are Chamber of Commerce board of Directors, American Legion Auxiliary, Craig County Outreach Cancer Association and the Vinita Leadership Class.

Dan Janis sponsored Jeanne into the Vinita Rotary Club in 2001.

Spotlight On Service...Backpack Nutrition Program

What would you do if you knew a child in your town was going home hungry? In 2004, a student's weight loss was noticed by his teachers. ‚ "The teachers wondered what was happening to this big, strapping high school boy, " recounts Lynnda Sooter, previous director of the Backpack Nutrition Program. ‚ " loving teacher approached him and found out he was hungry. " Thanks to that teacher and the generosity of our community, the Backpack Nutrition Program was launched.
The Salvation Army Backpack Nutrition Program supplies a child or teen in need with nutritious foods they can take home. These include healthy snacks and foods which don't require refrigeration or heating and can go with the young person anywhere. Examples include snack crackers, fruit cups, nuts, juices, canned meats, dried fruit, beef jerky and other items in easy-open packages. Also, easy-heat, microwaveable items are included.
In the beginning, 6 children were served through the program. It has steadily grown. As recent as January of this year, 43 hungry children were being served. According to Board Member Marge Dixon, it costs approximately $60 per child each month to provide them with take-home meals.
All funding for this program comes from donations from the community. Currently,several churches in Craig County make regular contributions of food and money each month to the Backpack Program. The Vinita Rotary Club also contributes regularly each year to the program. This year, all proceeds from our shotgun raffle also benefited the Backpack Nutrition Program.
The need continues to stay steady in the county, and the Salvation Army can only offer these services if those in the community donate resources. If you’d like to make a personal contribution to the Salvation Army, you can mail it to P.O. Box 147, Vinita or call 256-2037. All donations are tax deductible.
